Dr. Overbaugh’s work focuses on various aspects of HIV-1 transmission and pathogenesis, and is noted for its emphasis on translational research. She has worked closely with investigators in Kenya for the past ~20 years, including on a number of studies of mother-to-child and heterosexual transmission of HIV-1. Studies in her lab are focused on understanding the biology of HIV transmission, particularly transmission to women and to infants. She has had a long-standing interest in the selective bottleneck that occurs during HIV transmission and the role of antibodies in this process. Her team is pursuing studies to try to help define immune correlates of protection from HIV infection in naturally exposed cohorts. The laboratory is also part of a collaborative team that is pursuing translational research on the molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 transmission, including the impact of antiviral resistance in Africa. Her interests include supporting research training and development of African laboratory-based scientists, developing infrastructure for research in countries most affected by HIV and transfer of relevant technologies.
