Dr. Taubenberger’s major unique contribution is the determination of the complete genomic sequence of the 1918 influenza A HINI virus from preserved pathology specimens. This provided the opportunity to define the virulence determinants of this uniquely virulent virus and to study its origin from the avian or animal world.
